The Surrey RCMP is issuing a warning after a 9-year-old girl was reportedly lured through her bedroom window and sexually assaulted on a nearby park bench.

The suspect then took the girl to a nearby yard and told her to wait but she ran straight home and told her mother what happened.

The mother initially reported her daughter had been abducted from the home near 99 Avenue and 128 Street.

Police do not have a description of the suspect at this time because the victim is nine-years-old and they do not want to push her for information or rush her.

“We have to go through it at her pace, a pace that’s good for the investigation yet not additionally traumatizing to our nine-year-old victim,” said RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Dale Carr speaking to reporters Thursday afternoon.

Mounties also say they do not know whether the incident was random or targeted but they are warning residents to ensure windows are secured at night.

The incident does not appear connected with another sex assault in South Surrey earlier in August, according to police.

Anyone with more information is asked to call the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
