Burnaby Mounties are investigating after a man in his thirties was jumped by a group of men outside Metrotown shopping centre early Saturday morning.

Police were called to the area just outside The Bay near Bennett Street and Nelson Street at about 2 a.m. after receiving multiple calls about the incident.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Curtis Burks says by the time officers arrived all the suspects except for one had fled.

The male suspect was taken into custody and charges of assault causing bodily harm are likely to be recommended.

Burks says police don't know the motive behind the attack, whether a weapon was involved or what the man was doing there so early in the morning.

Witness Kyle MacLeod said he was sleeping when he was woken by shouting.

“We heard someone screaming that they had a knife. We looked out a window and we saw there was a group of guys,” he said. “It looked like it was one group really putting a beating on one other person.”

Neighbour Jin Pyeon was watching television when he heard the shouting.

“We saw about six or seven young men beating up one person,” said Pyeon. “He was running away but they caught him and they just bring him down to the ground and they kicked him and hit him.”

Pyeon said some of the group jumped into a car, while others ran off on foot.

The investigation is ongoing.
