A 50-year-old man was killed in a Surrey house fire early Saturday morning after he was trapped in the basement.

Surrey firefighters rescued the man from a basement suite in the 15600-block of 82nd Ave. just after midnight. CPR was performed, but the man died shortly after.

BC RCMP says the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature, and was likely caused by a lit cigarette.

The home’s smoke alarm was disconnected and found on top of the fridge. The upper part of the home was not damaged in the blaze.
