A 47-year-old man is facing charges after he allegedly attacked a fast food worker in East Vancouver then drove off on a stolen motorcycle.

Police said the incident started with an argument at the McDonald’s at Main Street and Terminal Avenue late Thursday night.

“A man with a motorcycle helmet allegedly assaulted one of the staff members by striking him in the face with his helmet,” Sgt. Brian Montague said.

The man left before police arrived, but Montague said officers found a suspect on a motorcycle a couple hours later.

Police determined the vehicle was stolen, and used two cruisers to box the motorcycle in near St. George Street and Kingsway Avenue.

“Our goal obviously is to avoid any pursuit. Pursuits are inherently very dangerous to our officers, the suspects and of course the general public,” Montague said.

Police said the suspect started revving the pinned motorcycle’s engine and trying to escape, so officers used a police dog to restrain him.

“He did receive a couple a couple of punctures to his leg. He was taken to hospital briefly for treatment and is now in jail,” Montague said.

The suspect, who is known to police, is facing charges of assault with a weapon and possession of stolen property over $5,000.
