A woman was rushed to hospital in serious condition and a man is in custody following an assault in the Surrey, B.C. suburb of Whalley Monday afternoon.

It happened at around 1:30 p.m. in a home in the 12800-block of 100th Avenue, according to Surrey RCMP.

Officers responding to reports of a man threatening a woman with a gun found the female victim inside the home.

Surrey RCMP initially said the woman suffered injuries consistent with a gunshot wound, but later confirmed she suffered head injuries following the assault.

The male suspect ran away from the scene, but was later arrested nearby without incident.

Police believe the man and woman are known to each other.

Police are going door-to-door in the neighbourhood looking for witnesses who may have seen or heard something.
