Two people were killed following a horrific crash on Highway 1 between Chilliwack and Hope Friday night.

RCMP Cst. Steve Martin said a grey Ford Focus carrying two passengers was travelling westbound on the highway near the Peters Road exit when it crossed the centre median and struck a black Chevrolet Aveo.

Emergency crews, including one basic life support ambulance, two advanced life support ambulances and two air ambulances were on the scene of the crash at around 8 p.m.

One driver died at the scene at Herrling Island near Peters Road and the other was pronounced dead at the Chilliwack hospital Saturday morning. Both victims, one a 67-year-old woman, the other a 72-year-old man, were from Hope.

The passenger in the Ford Focus has serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Highway 1 eastbound was closed until 1 a.m. Saturday morning.

RCMP are investigating if weather was a factor.
