WorkSafe BC is investigating after a man was buried waist-deep in debris at a Surrey construction site Tuesday afternoon.

The man was working down a 15-foot trench as part of a sewer project when the sides suddenly caved in. He had been working inside a protective cage, but had stepped out for some reason when the accident happened.

He was quickly buried up to his waist in debris.

RCMP say two coworkers tried to free him but the debris was too heavy. A neighbour alerted 911.

The road was shut down as a precautionary measure while the fire department worked to dig the man free. It was feared vibrations from passing trucks could loosen debris in the trench, further trapping the victim.

He suffered minor injuries.
