The fire danger rating increased to ‘Extreme’ in West Vancouver Wednesday afternoon leading to a number of banned activities in the city.

Smoking, as well as both charcoal and propane barbeques are now banned from all West Van parks, according to West Vancouver Fire Rescue. Fireworks are also banned in the midst of extremely dry conditions and record-breaking heat.

In a post on their Facebook page, West Van Fire Rescue said it is crucial for people to adhere to these bans.

“These very dry conditions mean our community is at risk making it even more important for everyone to practice summer fire safety,” the post read.

The extreme danger rating means the risk of fire is very serious according to the BC Wildfire Service. Under this rating new fires start easily, spread quickly, and challenge fire suppression efforts.

A wide-sweeping campfire ban has also been in effect across British Columbia since last week.

The fire danger rating has also been increased to extreme near Spanish Banks and fireworks are banned in Vancouver.

According to the North Vancouver Fire Department, the fire danger rating is high and soon to be increased to extreme in that city as well.

The Canada Day fireworks were cancelled in Port Coquitlam due to high winds and dry weather.
