A woman in her 20s has died after falling from a 13th floor balcony of a downtown Vancouver apartment building in a case police have deemed suspicious.

Witnesses reportedly heard screams just before the woman plummeted to the ground on Howe near Pacific Street at around 5 p.m. Sunday.

Paramedics arrived shortly after and pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Police said it's too early to tell if the fall was accidental.

"We don't know if she was alone on the balcony, we don't know what she was doing on the balcony, and we don't know how she came to fall off that balcony and ultimately to her death," said Sgt. Randy Fincham.

"That's something that we're hoping that the public can come forward and help us out [with]."

The VPD’s Major Crime Section and Forensic Identification Unit remained at the building throughout the night trying to figure out exactly what happened.
