The Vancouver Whitecaps (7W-3L-8D) wanted to extend their unbeaten streak to 10 games Thursday night, but it wasn't meant to be as the Portland Timbers (7W-5L-5D) collected a 2-1 win at Swangard Stadium.

The loss marked the first home-pitch loss for the Whitecaps this season, and also extended Portland's unbeaten streak to five games.

It was the first win in Vancouver for the Timber since May 23, 2004.

Vancouver did own the lead at the beginning of the second half when Nizar Khalfan scored to put the home team up 1-0, but two late goals from the visitors spoiled the ‘Caps chances of a win.

Centre back Greg Janicki was sent off the field for a professional foul while in the Vancouver goalie box, which lead to a Ryan Pore penalty shot.

Pore made no mistake of potting the ball in back of the net to tie things up 1-1.

Portland's Mamadou Danso then scored his first goal of the season to seal the win for the Timbers and stop Vancouver's unbeaten record at nine games.

Whitecaps Head Coach Teitur Thordarson thought his team's loss was due to a lack of concentration after Janicki's red card.

"We had a little period after their penalty where we seemed a bit irritated and lost focus a little bit," he said to Whitecapsfc.com.

"I feel that was the only negative thing from our side, as we played quite well tonight."

Vancouver only has Friday and Saturday to dwell on Thursday's let-down that was in front of a sold-out crowd.

The NSC Minnesota Stars come to town on Sunday night to play the ‘Caps at Swangard.

Kick off is at 7 p.m. PST.
