Vancouver police say the seven people injured in a horrific stabbing spree in the West End neighbourhood Thursday night appear to have been attacked at random.

Sgt. Randy Fincham said the only thing connecting most of the victims is that they were at an apartment building at Barclay and Bute streets at around 6:45 p.m. when their assailant struck.

“It appears that a lot of these victims were unrelated to each other and they had no dealings with each other tonight. It was something that possibly happened in the hallway,” Fincham said.

Officers and paramedics were called to the scene and found the victims, who range in age from their 20s to 60s, suffering from various stab wounds.

Six of them, three men and three women, were rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The seventh did not require hospitalization.

Witnesses told CTV News a chaotic scene unfolded as officers scoured the area for a suspect still on the loose.

“There were about six or eight cop cars on the scene. People were hanging over their balconies directing police, so obviously they could see the [suspect],” onlooker Angela Robinson said.

“I heard the police shout, ‘Vancouver Police, stay where you are,’ a few times and then I thought it would be best to get out of there.”

Police confirmed a 33-year-old man was found at a suite in the building and arrested. The suspect does not appear to be a resident, however.

“We’re looking at how he got into the building, or what he was doing in the building at that time,” Fincham said.

Detectives from the Vancouver Police Major Crime Section and the Forensic Identification Unit were called to the scene and Fincham said they would be there overnight.
