A police dog is in hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed by a robbery suspect in South Vancouver.

Police say a man tried to rob the Esso gas station at Fraser Street and Marine Drive shortly before 7:30 p.m. Friday, but was scared off by a staff member.

A K-9 unit was called to the scene to track down the suspect, and found a 20-year-old man near Main Street and 52nd Avenue shortly after.

When police tried to arrest him, he allegedly slashed the dog with a knife.

The suspect was arrested at the scene and the animal was rushed to an emergency clinic for treatment.

Police say the suspect, a Vancouver resident, faces robbery, weapons and assault charges.
