As police search for two suspects who fled the scene after a Burnaby shooting Saturday evening, Vancouver's mayor is calling for action.
Police confirmed a 51-year-old man was shot outside of a fast food restaurant in Brentwood Town Centre at about 8:30 p.m. Police said the man was in a Dodge Durango when he was shot.
Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop of Burnaby RCMP said police spoke with people who saw the shooting take place outside the mall.
“When we arrived on scene we were able to talk to witnesses and canvas the area for video,” she said.
The man is recovering in hospital from non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery. Burnaby RCMP is now reviewing security footage from a nearby camera to apprehend the two male suspects. Police said the motive for this brash daylight shooting is unclear at this point.
This latest incident comes after three murders in Surrey in the past week and several shootings around Metro Vancouver. One man was critically injured Thursday in what police said was likely a targeted shooting in East Vancouver. Another man was shot in the hand on Wednesday in Surrey’s Clayton Heights neighbourhood.
Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson said that while the number of murders in Vancouver was down overall in 2013, the latest brazen public shootings are cause for concern.
“There’s still way too much gun violence and brazen shootings in public. Which is very, very troubling,” Robertson told CTV News on Sunday.
“The case is very strong that we should have more integration and more regional policing like most other big cities around the world,” Robertson said. “But the province hasn’t shown any real appetite there.”
