A Vancouver police officer is facing charges of sexual assault and incest, according to the Burnaby RCMP.

The officer was arrested Thursday afternoon for an alleged assault that occurred between July 31 and August 1, 2009. The officer in question has been suspended with pay by the Vancouver Police Department.

The male officer will appear in Provincial Court in September. Due to the nature of the charges, the officer's name has been put under a publication ban and will not be released.

Insp. Mario Giardini released a statement Friday condemning the alleged incident.

"The VPD considers the nature of the offense to be very serious and abhors the actions attributed to this member," it read.

"The Department has informed the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner and will continue to provide the Burnaby RCMP with our complete cooperation."

The long-standing officer will retain pay for the first 30 days of the suspension, at which point Chief Constable Jim Chu will recommend whether to continue the suspension with or without pay.

The VPD Professional Standards Section will shadow the Burnaby RCMP's criminal investigation, and conduct a parallel investigation of its own.
