Two Vancouver police officers were sent to hospital early Monday morning after their unmarked cruiser crashed into a downtown lamppost.

The officers were responding to a 911 call around 12:30 a.m. when they swerved to avoid another car entering the intersection of Robson and Hornby Streets, and slammed into a light standard, Const. Lindsey Houghton told ctvbc.ca.

The two officers were taken to hospital, where one was released almost immediately, and the other received stitches.

Houghton said that the officers had not switched on the cruiser's lights and sirens as they entered the intersection.

Investigators are now working to determine whether the police car was running a red light at the time of the crash.

No one in the second vehicle was injured, and the car was not damaged, Houghton said.
