Two people were injured, and three people were thrown overboard after a speed boat hit a log boom on Saturday night on the Fraser River near Mitchell Island.

Marc Proulx, Maritime Coordinator for the Canadian Coast Guard's Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria, said three people were thrown out of a 20-foot Sea Ray onto a log boom.

"The boat physically went up on the log boom and three people were thrown on top of it," he said.

Proulx said a witness on the shore heard people yelling for help and called 911 at around 10:51 p.m.

Three coast guard vessels and a Vancouver Police Marine Unit vessel arrived at the scene within 20 minutes. Proulx said the three people on the log boom were uninjured and two people on the boat were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening chest and spinal injuries.

"Everybody was fine," Proulx said. "None of the injuries were severe."

Proulx is blaming limited nighttime visibility and navigation error for the crash. It is not known whether speed or alcohol was a factor.
