RCMP have confirmed two people aboard a small light plane have died after it crashed into an industrial area of Richmond, B.C.

Witnesses say they heard a loud explosion near Bridgeport Road and No. 5 Road, near Ikea. Flames and smoke could be seen for hundreds of metres.

"I was sitting in my truck eating lunch and heard this noise of a plane real low, nose pointed straight at the ground and just crashed." Darren Van Leeuwen told CTV News.

It's believed the plane is a Piper Navajo. Emergency officials have evacuated the area surrounding the crash site and are warning people to stay away from the Knight Street Bridge.

CTV Aviation Expert, Mark Miller, says the plane was tracked to arrive at YVR's South Terminal at 10:10 p.m.

Late this evening Assitant Comm. Peter German from Richmond RCMP confirmed two people aboard the plane were killed.  It's not known if there are any other injuries.

CTV News has crews on scene and will have more on this developing story.
