From 3D to LED and LCD, there are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to buying a new television, but which one is best for you really depends on what you want to use it for.

Best Buy says many consumers are looking to either upgrade or add another TV because the technology has increased dramatically in recent years.

Smart TV's are best for the multi-tasking consumer who likes to be super connected.

"So you can now play Tetris like on your TV without a game console, while you're watching television, while you're streaming Netflix from one computer to another. It's pretty fantastic," said Kyle Pearson of Best Buy.

3D is also hot for the holiday season, and most brands now offer a surprisingly affordable HD version.

Tech expert Roopsy Sharma said consumers are surprised to learn that some models start at $999.

Plasmas are the fastest of the technologies, and perfect for people who love watching sports and action programs.

"The plasma motion flow is amazing, the hertz rating is fantastic," said Pearson.

Look for 120 hertz if you're a hard-core gamer. That way the TV will have a faster motion flow when you're playing a video game with lots of action on the screen.

"When you're playing your ‘Call of Duty' and you're turning around and strafing, you're going to get a really clean and smooth image as it goes, giving you a bit of an advantage over your competitors," Pearson said.

Gamers should also look at LCD or LED TV's because they prevent image retention.

And if your family loves movies, Peason said LED or plasmas are the way to go. Both offer fantastic colouring control.

"The LED's are bright, especially for kids who like those Pixar movies and a lot of that. They're bright and the colours are beautiful," he said.

If you live in a glass condo you might want to skip the plasma because it has a glass screen which can cause problems with reflection. The LCD and LED TV's have screens made of Plexiglas.
