Police are investigating the sudden death of a toddler at a Victoria hotel early Saturday morning.

Officers were called to Hotel Zed in the 3100-block of Douglas Street, near the Mayfair Mall, around 4 a.m. after receiving reports of a screaming woman.

Upon entering the hotel room, police found a distraught woman, a young child and a small toddler. The toddler had no vital signs, and despite emergency crew’s resuscitation efforts the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both the woman and other child are receiving medical attention. The identity of the toddler has not yet been released.

Victoria Police, the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit, and the BC Coroners Service are investigating the cause of death.
