A young driver will serve three years in jail for killing a newly engaged couple in Vancouver earlier this year, a judge ruled Friday.

Aneez Mohamed, 31, a cardiologist, and Chanelle Morgan, 25, a UBC student, were in a marked crosswalk just outside Granville Island when they were struck by an SUV in February.

Mohamed had proposed to Morgan just hours before. They died within seconds of the collision.

Kurtis Rock, 18, was going 120 km/h when he hit the couple. He had been drinking that night.

Rock left the scene but was later arrested.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and for leaving the scene.

At a sentencing hearing Friday, the judge noted that Rock's right to drive had been suspended at the time of accident.

"There is a history of Mr. Rock being dangerous where motor vehicles are involved," the judge said.

"He's obviously very immature."

But the judge also noted that Rock expressed remorse to police when he was arrested.

Rock, who has been in custody since his arrest, is also banned from driving for 10 years.

Before the judge's ruling, victim impact statements were read in court, including one from Morgan's mother.

"The two worst things in the world, as someone once said, is to love someone that doesn't love them back and for a parent to bury their child," the statement said.

There was also a statement from Mohamed's mother.

"If anyone deserved the best, he did, after all the fruits of his labour," the statement said. "I should be planning a wedding, not a funeral."

In an interview earlier this year, Morgan's father said the couple was very much in love.

"Every time I saw them together they glowed," Christopher Morgan said. "They were so in love, they were one, and they had just done some celebrating that evening and shared their love together."

Mohamed and Morgan were holding hands at the time of the collision.
