The teenage driver being investigated for drug use after a fatal collision on the Sea-to-Sky Highway has been released from custody, Mounties say.
The grisly crash occurred Saturday night near Whistler when a Dodge pickup truck crossed the centre line and struck an oncoming limousine being driven by 54-year-old Shafiqur Rahman.
Investigators say Rahman, a married father-of-two, died after the limousine exploded and became engulfed in flames. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
A 19-year-old Calgary resident was arrested at the scene, but RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen confirms he has been released without conditions. No charges have yet been laid.
Sgt. Peter Thiessen said police suspect the young man was impaired, but can't say what drug or drugs he may have taken.
"We have a drug recognition expert that's supporting the investigators," Thiessen added.
Proving someone is under the influence of drugs is more difficult than proving they are impaired by alcohol, Thiessen said, but still a criminal offence.
Rahman's employer, Aerocar Servic, issued a statement Sunday describing him as "an excellent and professional chauffeur, who was well liked by his fellow chauffeurs, Aerocar's staff and all who know him."
His colleagues at the company, where he worked for the last 10 years, have started collecting donations to help his wife and two sons.
