The teenage girl accused of fatally stabbing 17-year-old Angela Qui made her first court appearance in B.C. Provincial Court Wednesday.
Eighteen-year-old Katey Renieta Gonzales of Surrey has been charged with second-degree murder after a house party full of drunken teenagers turned fatal last Friday.
Her lawyer, Paul McMurray, would not say if his client was going to seek bail. He said Gonzales is distraught over the situation and that the two girls didn't know each other.
"There's a lot of rumour and innuendo out there about what happened and why it happened," he told reporters.
"My concern is just to ensure that the case, when it comes to be judged by a judge or a jury, is to judge fairly on the facts and not on what's out there as speculation."
Police say a fight broke out between three girls in a basement suite of a rental home near Knight Street and East 51st Avenue on May 21. Two girls ended up being stabbed.
Qui was found unconscious on a sidewalk suffering from multiple stab wounds around 1 a.m. She was rushed to the hospital but died of her injuries shortly after.
Another 16-year-old victim was taken to hospital. She was treated and later released.
Gonzales turned herself in to authorities on May 22.
VPD Inspector Mike Porteous said after Gonzales' arrest that he believed she was involved in the stabbing of the second victim.
She is set to appear in court again on June 10.
