An elderly woman has been airlifted to hospital after her SUV crashed off the dock at the Village Bay ferry terminal on Mayne Island Thursday afternoon.

The vehicle broke through a wood railing and landed upside-down on the rocks next to the water at around 5:20 p.m.

Firefighters and ambulance personnel managed to rescue the driver, who was loaded onto a stretcher and flown to Victoria General Hospital.

A doctor who happened to be at the scene briefly examined the woman’s injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.

It’s unclear what caused the crash, but it doesn’t appear anyone else was in the vehicle.

BC Ferries confirms one of the two berths at the terminal has been closed indefinitely, but no service disruptions are expected.
