A 53-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run that injured two female joggers in Metro Vancouver earlier this week.
Mounties confirm the suspect did not turn himself in, but was found at home in Surrey and taken into custody. His vehicle was also seized.
The suspect’s name is being withheld pending the approval of charges. Police say he faces a count of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, and has been released on a promise to appear in court in May.
Cpl. Bert Paquet issued a statement Thursday thanking the public for assisting with the police investigation.
“They were instrumental in helping our officers put the pieces together and track down the alleged suspect,” Paquet said.
“We are aware of the impact this incident has had on the community and hope this will help to bring some closure to the victims and their families.”
Mounties say media reports triggered the memory of someone who was at the accident scene Monday night and took down the licence plate number of a driver who was acting suspiciously.
The crash took place in Surrey at the intersection of 152 Street and 32 Avenue at around 9 p.m.
Traffic camera footage of the accident released Wednesday shows a white crossover vehicle striking the victims as they crossed the street.
Both of the women, 51-year-old Shelley Lammers and 54-year-old Nola Carlson, were wearing reflective gear and headlamps.
Lammers was airlifted to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Carlson was treated for less-severe wounds and released.
Despite the arrest, Mounties said they are still looking for any potential witnesses who have yet to come forward.
