Support for Laibar Singh may be waning now that a $50,000 bond posted by the Sikh community may have to be forfeited.
Singh, who entered Canada with forged documents, suffered an aneurism in 2006. After exhausting all claims to stay in the country, he was ordered deported last year. He has avoided deportation for the past several months by seeking sanctuary in Sikh temples across the Lower Mainland.
But now Singh could be deported as early as next week.
Balwant Gill, the head of the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple, where Singh is presently staying, says the community is concerned about losing the surety.
"We do not want to forfeit the $50,000," he said. "We want to keep it. We want good things for Laibar Singh and for the Sikh community."
Singh reportedly said he would leave if he got the $50,000 bond, but Singh denies he ever asked for it.
"I didn't say anything, I'm not asking for the $50,000 either," he said. "The community is doing it, they did so much. I haven't asked for anything."
The Sikh community says they will decide what do with Singh in a special meeting on Saturday.
In December, the Canadian Border Services Agency decided to allow Singh to remain in Canada after a strong showing of support in defence of Singh at Vancouver International Airport.
