A dog sled tour operator is appalled at word that 100 healthy sled dogs were slaughtered at a Whistler, B.C., outfit when demand for dog tours dried up after the Olympics.

WorkSafe BC documents show a Whistler man was granted compensation for post-traumatic stress after he says he was ordered to shoot the pack in April of last year.

An SPCA official says details of the shootings suggest some of the dogs suffered and did not die instantly.

Whistler RCMP confirm they have opened a file and will await direction from SPCA special constables, who have the power to recommend criminal charges.

The operator of Candle Creek Kennels at Big White, near Kelowna, B.C., says most dog tour operators would starve themselves before neglecting their dogs.

Tim Tedford says the actions of the tour operator show more interest in the bottom line than in the welfare of the animals.
