Shooting near Burnaby sports complex sends 1 to hospital
Vancouver -
Police in Burnaby are investigating a shooting near a youth sports complex in the city that sent one person to hospital Saturday afternoon.
Burnaby RCMP told CTV News Vancouver officers were called to the intersection of Sprott Street and Norland Avenue just after 4:30 p.m. for a report of shots fired.
The area is home to Scotia Barn - formerly known as 8 Rinks - and adjacent to the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex and the Christine Sinclair Community Centre.
RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Mike Kalanj said he was unable to confirm the seriousness of the victim's injuries Saturday afternoon, noting that police were "very early" in their investigation.
On Sunday, Kalanj confirmed in a news release that the victim - a 33-year-old man - had suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
CTV News video from the scene shows paramedics helping the victim onto a stretcher. The man appears to be conscious and moving around, and crews appear to be focusing on his leg.
Multiple RCMP vehicles could be seen parked outside the Scotia Barn arena.
Police said Sunday that the suspect in the shooting had reportedly fled the area in a dark-coloured SUV.
Investigators are asking anyone who has information about the shooting or dash cam video from the area recorded between 4 and 5 p.m. Saturday to contact them at 604-646-9999.
“It is unsettling to see such blatant disregard for public safety,” said Kalanj in the news release.
“At this time, investigators do not believe this incident is related to the Lower Mainland gang conflict. Our officers are working diligently to identify and locate the people or person responsible.”
