A memorial will be held Friday at J. Percy Page High School for an Edmonton teenager who was killed during a ski trip in B.C.

Skyler Lockwood, 16, died Monday morning after he lost control and slammed into a tree at the Panorama Ski Resort near Invermere, B.C.

The accident happened at the junction of two blue runs, described as being moderately-difficult.

School board chair Don Fleming released a statement saying, "Our hearts go out to Skyler's family and friends. Understandably this is an extremely emotional time for the family. It was important for us as a district to pledge our complete support to the Lockwoods during this difficult period of loss and sorrow."

School officials say ski lessons were offered to students on the trip but they weren't mandatory.

Representatives with the school board say there are no plans to review field trip policy. Nine upcoming ski trips in the division are expected to go ahead as planned.

The high school's flags have been lowered to half mast in Skyler's memory. Friday's memorial will commence at noon.
