A Richmond man with no criminal record has been charged in connection with the murder of a Peruvian national in south Vancouver.

Jessica Eguia-Cornejo, who had been in the city since mid-2008, was found dead in her Fraser Street apartment on June 10.

Anthony Blake Cruz was arrested on Friday without incident and will make his first court appearance Monday. He faces one charge of second-degree murder.

The cause of her death has not been released, but investigators said there were obvious signs of trauma on the body. Neighbours said they were told by police that the 36-year-old was severely beaten.

The building manager said Eguia-Cornejo had just signed a lease the week before, and had been living alone in the building for just a few days.

The relationship between the suspect and the victim is not known.

The death marked Vancouver's sixth homicide of the year.
