One of the two people shot at a home in East Vancouver Friday morning was pregnant, and has tragically lost her unborn baby.

Police confirmed the 31-year-old Vancouver resident was in the third trimester of her pregnancy when she and a 23-year-old Langley man were shot shortly before 6 a.m.

"She was rushed to hospital in critical condition," Const. Jason Doucette told reporters. "Unfortunately, the unborn child did not survive."

The Langley man’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The shooting took place in a residential suite that's located above a printing shop on Industrial Avenue and Scotia Street. The business owner, Jeff Grayston, told CTV News the victim is a "girlfriend of someone working here."

The woman was able to call 911 on her own to report the shooting, and told police the attacker had already fled the scene.

A bystander who works at the print shop told CTV News she confronted the shooter.

The witness, Dollie Middleton, said she was taking a break when she heard yelling outside.

"I didn't know what the heck was going on. I thought maybe somebody was robbing us," she said.

Then she realized her friend was being attacked. She called her boyfriend to help, then saw the woman come down from the upstairs suite, bleeding.

"It was devastating. Being a mom, I can't imagine… As far as I'm concerned, he's a coward. And now we know the baby has passed on, he's a baby killer."

Middleton said she confronted the gunman, who told her there was no gun. She told him someone must have shot the woman, as she'd seen the bullet hole.

"I was really angry. I assaulted him. I punched him in the face and he punched me right back," she said.

"Who could do that to a woman? It was obvious she was pregnant."

The motive hasn't been confirmed, but police said it was not linked to organized crime.

“It’s still very early in the investigation, but all indicators right now are that this is a targeted shooting, and not related to any gang conflict," Doucette said.

Authorities haven't confirmed how many shots were fired, how the shooter managed to get inside the building, or who was the initial target of the terrible crime.

"What happened in there and what happened after they left are going to form part of this (investigation), and we're going to get to the bottom of it," Doucette said. "It's very important for us to hold this person or people accountable."

A heavy police presence was deployed to the neighbourhood after the shooting, but officers have not been able to locate a suspect.

Doucette said they are in the process of collecting forensic evidence, speaking to witnesses and gathering any video that may have been captured in the area.

Anyone who has video that was recorded early Friday morning, or any other information that could be related to the shooting, is asked to contact the Vancouver Police Department or Crime Stoppers.

"Please, give us a call," Doucette said.
