The driver and passenger of a Porsche Cayenne were taken to hospital Monday afternoon after the SUV crashed into a water-filled ditch in Richmond, B.C.

The accident happened near Westminster Highway and No. 8 Road.

RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Jennifer Pound told a tree alongside the road had apparently toppled over and hit the windshield of the SUV.

Pictures from CTV's Chopper 9 showed the SUV half-submerged in muddy-brown water. Water entered the vehicle, but there was no threat of drowning, Pound said.

Crews had to use the Jaws of Life to tear off the roof and remove the occupants, a male driver and female passenger.

The extent of their injuries is unknown.

City crews were called to remove the tree.
