The RCMP is warning residents of North Burnaby to be careful after bears were spotted in different locations of the region.

Burnaby RCMP is also telling local residents to keep all their garbage inside their garage.

"As members were patrolling looking for the bear it was noted that many residents had their garbage outside, which is a definite attraction for bears,'' said Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Alexandra Mulvihill

The first sighting was August 19, 2008 at approximately 4:00 p.m., when police received a number of reports of a smaller bear in the area of Halifax and Burnwood.

The bear was then reported in the area of Montecito Elementary and the 2600 Block of Bainbridge St.

Burnaby RCMP and Conservation Officer's attended to all three locations and were unsuccessful in locating the bear. One of the last sightings had the bear trying to cross the Lougheed Highway.

On August 20, 2008 at approximately 10:00 a.m. police received a report of a sighting in the 3600 Block at Kensington of a larger black bear.

A request was made for Conservation Officers to attend to the area with members of the Burnaby RCMP.

It was also learned that Conservation had a report that the bear had been struck by a vehicle. Burnaby RCMP officers did extensive patrols in the area and were unable to locate the bear or a vehicle.

This area is highly populated with trees and it is possible that the bear retreated back into the forest.
