Mounties in Burnaby say a 75-year-old man is dead following a hit-and-run involving a semi-truck on Thursday.

In a statement, the RCMP said officers were dispatched to Marine Way just east of Boundary Road at 11:20 a.m.

"From witness accounts, it appears as though the pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by the vehicle," police said.

The pedestrian was declared dead at the scene.

The area around the scene was closed and drivers were asked to avoid the area as police investigated.

Marine Way reopened to traffic shortly after 5 p.m.

Investigators have identified a semi-truck towing a dark red shipping container as the vehicle of interest.

Police say witnesses told them the semi driver stopped briefly at the scene before continuing east on Marine.

The cause of the collision remains unclear.

There is no sidewalk in that area of Marine Way, just a bike lane and a gravel shoulder.

Anyone with information that could advance the investigation is asked to contact police at 604-646-9999.
