A person is dead following a crash that shut down the Sea-to-Sky Highway in both directions for close to two hours Saturday, according to RCMP.

Police on scene told CTV News a solo vehicle travelling northbound on Highway 99 ran off the road near the Garibaldi Salt Shed.

One person in the vehicle died and others were in the car at the time of the crash, according to RCMP. The identity or gender of the deceased has not been confirmed.

It’s unclear whether the victim was the driver or a passenger. A coroner was on scene assessing the incident.

Four other victims were taken to hospital, but it’s unclear whether they were all passengers in the vehicle.

Two people with non-life threatening injuries were taken by ambulance to Squamish General Hospital. One person was flown by air ambulance to Vancouver General Hospital and another was flown to BC Children’s Hospital. No word yet on the extent of their injuries.

The ministry’s website DriveBC reported just after 2 p.m. that Highway 99, which connects Vancouver to Whistler, had been shut down near the Garibaldi Salt Shed because of the crash.

The highway has since reopened but DriveBC warned drivers to expect heavy traffic congestion.
