One person is dead and two people are in hospital after a four-vehicle collision near Vanderhoof Monday.

Police say the crash happened at around 9:40 a.m. on Highway 16 at Beaumont Park and involved two commercial vehicles and two passenger vehicles.

The collision occurred when the driver of an SUV lost control of the vehicle and crossed the centre line, hitting a car head on. The person in the car died at the scene.

The SUV was then struck by a commercial truck with a trailer, and that vehicle was then struck by a commercial crane unit.

The two occupants in the SUV had to be extricated from the wreckage and were taken to the hospital. Their condition is unknown.

The drivers of the commercial vehicles were not injured.

Highway 16 remained closed Monday afternoon as police investigate the crash. Mounties do not believe weather or road conditions to be a factor in the collision.
