One man is dead and five people were injured in a brazen shooting outside Kelowna's Delta Grand Okanagan Resort on Sunday at around 2:45 p.m., according to police.
Although police are not confirming the identity of the victims, unconfirmed reports suggest that notorious Red Scorpion gang member Jonathan Bacon was killed in the shooting.
Const. Steve Holmes said in a press conference Sunday night that an unconfirmed number of people driving in a silvery-green SUV opened fire on a white Porsche Cayenne.
The suspects fled in the vehicle up Cawston Avenue before disappearing in an unknown direction.
Witnesses told CTV News that the shots were fired from an automatic machine gun.
"I saw a guy in a mask holding a gun and it was an automatic," a witness said. "Because it was probably sixty shots fired within seconds."
Kelsey Carwithen of the British Columbia Ambulance Service confirmed that six people were taken to Kelowna General Hospital.
Police are currently investigating the incident and have not made any arrests.
Although Holmes would not confirm that the shooting was gang related, he said police do not believe the general public is at risk.
"Clearly, this kind of incident is very rare in Kelowna, however when it does happen it is shocking and traumatic to those affected by it and is of concern to those living in this community," he said.
Witnesses are asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300 or Crime Stoppers.
