An 18-month-old boy has died after falling into a backyard swimming pool in North Vancouver Monday afternoon.

The toddler was initially reported missing from a home on Fairway Place in Deep Cove at around 5:15 p.m., but the first Mountie to arrive on scene located the infant underwater.

The officer, an Integrated Police Dog Service member, dove in and pulled the child from the pool then conducted CPR until paramedics arrived.

The boy was rushed to Lions Gate Hospital, but could not be revived.

"Despite all heroic efforts of emergency personnel, the young child was not able to be resuscitated," Cpl. Richard De Jong said in a statement. "The North Vancouver RCMP extend our deepest condolences to the parents and family of this child."

Police could not confirm who was at home at the time of the tragedy, but grief counselors have been sent to assist the family, including the boy's two older sisters.

The investigation has been turned over to the BC Coroners Service.
