Delays, cancellations, and sold-out tickets are causing a holiday headache for some Greyhound travelers in British Columbia.

Customers who have already bought tickets and those looking to purchase are voicing complaints.

Customer Gordon Piebinga was trying to get to Calgary from Vancouver, but wasn’t having any luck.

“They were sold out. All [the] tickets were sold out,” said Piebinga.

Piebinga did eventually find an open spot, but it was four days after his intended travel date.

Even those customers booking early have come across snags. One bus bound for Abbotsford was cancelled Monday morning without notice.

“I did everything right; I bought my ticket early, I showed up early,” said passenger Shane Gordon. “And no guarantee to get anywhere.”

A lack of drivers may be part of the problem that caused a seven hour delay in Kamloops for passengers on their way to Calgary.

“It was bad,” said passenger Tyler Brosseau. “There were 50-something people stranded there. There were pregnant ladies sleeping on the table with their other children trying to keep warm.”

The company apologized for the delay, saying the driver needed to take a mandatory rest break.

“Every bus that we have and every driver is specifically scheduled, and unfortunately this driver did spend more time on the road than we'd anticipated based on road conditions,” said Greyhound spokesperson Maureen Richmond.

Richmond said weather conditions have caused numerous delays in Western Canada.

“Although we'd like to keep the schedule every single time, if the roads prevent us from doing so, we have to travel with the safety of passengers and employees in mind,” she said.

The company is directing delayed passengers to call its customer service line.
