The suspect in a Surrey elementary school shooting last month is now in custody after allegedly dodging a traffic stop and crashing into a parked car.

Surrey RCMP say they tried to pull over a red Ford Mustang around 2 a.m. Thursday but the vehicle sped away from the officer.

It crashed into an unoccupied vehicle nearby on 146th Street and the two male occupants ran from the scene.

Two men believed to be the passenger and driver were arrested after several police units, including a K9 team, were dispatched to the area.

One of the men arrested is Amarpreet Samra, wanted for charges of attempt to commit murder and intentionally discharging a firearm.

The charges against the 21-year-old are in connection to a shooting that happened outside the Strawberry Hill Elementary School on Sept. 15.

Up to six shots were fired during a confrontation between two groups of young men on the school grounds. One struck a 22-year-old man, but he was not seriously hurt. The other shots hit the building and a nearby home.

The RCMP believes the attack is linked to the violent turf war that’s been waged in Surrey and Delta this year.

Surrey RCMP are still looking for the other suspect in the shooting, 21-year-old Shakiel Basra.

Basra is described as 6’3, 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
