The man who was shot to death outside a busy suburban shopping mall this weekend had a long criminal history, and survived a previous attempt on his life at an upscale restaurant in Vancouver.

Homicide investigators have identified the victim as known gang member 32-year-old Gurmit Singh Dhak. He was gunned down in the parking lot of Metrotown Centre in Burnaby, B.C., on Saturday evening.

Police called to the scene found his body inside a black BMW SUV that had been sprayed with bullets.

Dhak was the target of another shooting in 2007 where two masked men opened fire inside the Quattro on Fourth restaurant in Kitsilano. He and a woman were hit by bullets but both survived.

Dhak was on parole at the time after a manslaughter conviction for his involvement in the murder of a 19-year-old man outside a Vancouver nightclub in 1999.

Investigators believe Dhak's murder was targeted and are asking for anyone with information to contact police.
