Whistler RCMP say a motorcyclist has died after a logging truck spilled its load on the Sea-to-Sky highway, halting traffic in both directions.

The truck was southbound on the Highway 99 Saturday afternoon when it lost control driving around a bend near the Nordic area of Whistler, Mounties told CTV News.

The logs struck a northbound motorcycle and another vehicle. The motorcyclist was taken to the Whistler Health Care Centre, but has since died from his injuries. Police did not confirm the victim's age.

The occupants of the vehicle struck by logs were taken to hospital for precautionary reasons, according to police.

The truck driver sustained injuries in the accident, but officials have not disclosed how severe they are.

DriveBC confirmed the major route was closed due to “a motor vehicle incident” earlier Saturday afternoon.

One witness claiming to be in the area said she heard a “massive bang” followed by smoke before fire trucks arrived on scene.

“A logger truck tipped over and landed the logs on a motorbike out for a ride on this beautiful sunny day,” she said in a post on Facebook. “They are now doing CPR on him.”

In a follow-up comment she wrote “They got him out from the logs.”

She also posted a picture showing emergency vehicles and logs covering the road.

DriveBC said the route’s estimated re-opening time is between 8 p.m. and midnight.
