In the battle of the sexes, it appears men have a healthy lead when it comes to dangerous driving.

Numbers released by the Abbotsford Police Department Monday show men of all ages were hit with a far greater number of tickets relating to impaired driving, distracted driving and speeding than women in the last three years.

Const. Ian MacDonald said he made the discovery when looking at Abbotsford’s distracted driving numbers earlier this year.

He found that, despite a nearly even split between the number male and female drivers on the road, men have received a whopping 71 per cent of violation tickets since 2010, compared to the 29 per cent received by women.

In a release, MacDonald said police aren’t suggesting women are better drivers than men, but he does expect the numbers will provoke a “healthy debate concerning this and other Road Safety issues.”

Abbotsford police hope the statistics will challenge all drivers to “review and reflect on their driving behaviours.”

Some other interesting dangerous driving statistics from the Abbotsford Police Department, broken down by age:

  • The biggest gap between men and women is for drivers aged 21 to 30. Police handed out 9,960 violation tickets to men compared to just 4,127 tickets for women in the age category.
  • Similarly, men between 21 to 30 years old were issued 28 per cent of drunk-driving tickets from 2010 to now, while women in the same age bracket were only handed five per cent of tickets.
  • The narrowest margin between genders was found in young distracted drivers. Females between the ages of 16 and 20 netted 48 tickets, while the guys were slapped with 90 infractions overall.

Have your say: Do you think men are more dangerous behind the wheel than women?
