If you want to know what names are allowed on the label check out the official Canadian Food Inspection Agency Fish List.

Here's how it works:

Type in the English or French name of the fish you are looking for in the search bar, then check the box below to include all other common names that could be associated with the fish name. Then click submit.

Once the list populates, each species will have a taxonomic number and scientific name. Under Canada’s labeling laws, you may see several common names associated with those taxonomic numbers – those names would be allowed under Canada’s labeling rules.

According to CFIA regulators, only the common name(s) listed for the fish species should be used as the name(s) for the species being sold or processed in Canada.
