A young mom is recovering in hospital with a fractured eye socket and other injuries after a vehicle drove into the tent she was sleeping in with her two young sons at a campsite.

Shyane Cooper was with her 18-month-old toddler and three-year-old son at a recreational area in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., on Victoria Day when police say a pickup truck backed over their tent.

The 20-year-old managed to throw one of the boys out of the way and shielded the other one with her body. She suffered extensive injuries and facial lacerations.

The older boy required sutures for a laceration to the back of his head, and the toddler was uninjured.

Mounties say the driver of the truck was another 20-year-old woman who had just gotten into a heated argument with her boyfriend nearby.

That's when she is alleged to have backed the vehicle over Cooper's tent while the young mother was trying to leave the campsite early Monday morning.

The driver was arrested by Tumbler Ridge RCMP shortly after the incident and police say she has “assumed responsibility for her actions.”

She is set to appear in court July 18 on charges of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said the suspect has been receiving death threats over social media, and warned that it may hinder the investigation.

“Such actions are more harmful than helpful to an investigation and any threats of actual or perceived violence toward a person, animal, or damage to property will be investigated and could result in charges being pursued against the perpetrator of those threats,” he said.
