The loud sounds of exploding light bulbs at a rural property in Mission led to the discovery of a small grow-op Tuesday.

Police were called to the property on Sylvester Road in Mission after a neighbour heard an explosion and called 911. Police searched the area expecting to find booby traps or bombs, but instead found a smouldering fire and a small marijuana grow operation.

According to police four men between 29 to 31 years old were arrested fleeing the farm on foot allegedly throwing light bulbs into a bonfire causing them to explode.

“It was someone having a bonfire and fooling around with stuff on the fire,” said Cpl. Sharon Siluch. “I don’t think the intention was for any of them to bring attention to themselves, and they got caught,”

Police found around 100 large marijuana plants in a shed on the property during their search to clear the area of any dangers to the public.

“It’s kind of a unique way of bringing attention to yourself if you’re having a grow-op,” said Siluch.

The suspects, all from around Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, are facing charges of production of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. They have since been released and court dates are pending.
