A 23-year-old foreign student from China has been found dead after an apparent snowboarding accident on Whistler Mountain.
Mounties say the 23-year-old was reported missing by friends at around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, but search efforts were delayed overnight.
Crews eventually found her body Thursday morning in Fitzsimmons Creek between the sliding centre and a power plant.
“Initial investigation suggests that the snowboarder had traveled out-of-bounds and ended up near Fitzsimmons Creek and attempted to hike out,” Sgt. Rob Knapton said in a release.
The deceased’s name has not been released.
Knapton said the woman had friends on the mountain when she went missing, but had been snowboarding alone.
It’s unclear whether she went out-of-bounds on purpose, but Mounties are reminding the public to ensure they have proper skills and equipment before heading into the back country.
Skiers and snowboarders are also advised to travel in groups in case they get lost.
A backcountry skier was killed in an avalanche near Whistler Mountain last week.
