Osoyoos, B.C. has an identity problem: No one knows how to say the name of the small Okanagan town.

Mayor Stu Wells says he's constantly conducting tutorials on how to say Osoyoos -- it's just too many O's and S's to keep track of.

"Uh-SOO-yoos. There is no ‘soy' in Osoyoos," he said.

The First Nations people who came up with the name had it shorter by one syllable – Sooyoos – and their descendants have suggested changing it back. They joke that an Irishman changed to name in the mid-1800s.

The mayor is open to the idea.

"I would be positive if it was called Sooyoos. I don't need that O there," Wells said.

But he is stopping short of making it a political goal, saying there are other priorities and the switch would be too costly.
