A man accused of faking cancer to raise money was arrested in Victoria, B.C. Tuesday afternoon.

Police said 28-year-old Kristopher Nicholas Cook pretended to have cancer and held a fundraiser in a Calgary bar last year.

Broken City bar donated the space and Cook raised nearly $8,000 through a silent auction of donated goods.

Bar owner Andrew Brassard said they’re going to be a little more careful of who they trust.

“We're still going to trust people. Obviously we're going to look a little harder at what people say. But it's still a community,” he said. “Ninety-nine per cent of the time people are genuine.”

Police said people became skeptical Cook was attending medical treatments after the auction and began to doubt he ever had cancer. Police arrested Cook in downtown Victoria after receiving a tip.

Cook faces two counts of fraud over $5,000 and will be sent back to Calgary in the next few days.
