The former mayor of Port Moody, B.C. is turning his sights on provincial politics.

Joe Trasolini says he'll seek the New Democratic nomination in a provincial byelection in the riding of Port Moody-Coquitlam.

The four-term mayor says he has a record of getting things done and now he wants to work with the NDP to bring a balanced approach to solving problems.

NDP leader Adrian Dix says Trasolini's experience as mayor of Port Moody, including his work promoting the Evergreen rapid transit line, shows his commitment to his community.

A date for the byelection has not been set but it's expected by early spring.

The riding was left vacant when Liberal Iain Black resigned last month to become president and CEO of the Vancouver Board of Trade.

Trasolini is considered to be a close friend of Liberal Premier Christy Clark, and ran her 1996 election campaign.
