Almost 1,000 Canadian National Railway Company employees in Manitoba will be walking the picket lines if their union does not reach a settlement with CN by Tuesday, officials with the company said.

There are 950 employees in Manitoba who are members of the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) bargaining units that have approved the strike mandate, said Mark Hallman, director of communications for CN.

The strike would put close to 4,000 mechanical and clerical workers, excavator operators, and owner-operator truck drivers across Canada out on picket lines.

Negotiations between company and CAW are continuing in Montreal over the weekend, and CN is optimistic that strike will be avoided, Hallman said.

CAW has also approved a strike mandate for ongoing negotiations with Canadian Pacific. CAW represents mechanical services employees with CP, and a labour dispute with that company would not see employees off the job before Feb. 8, CP officials said in a press release.
